Equine Neuromuscular Based Dentistry™, also known as NBD, is a horse-centered practice dedicated to restoring natural inclination & realigning the jaw to rehabilitate the TMJ and achieve optimal neuromuscular, proprioceptive and biomechanical function in a horse’s whole body.
Anna is NBD 4
There are close direct connections as well as indirect connections between the different structures and systems of the body. What happens in the mouth is influence to superficial and deep myofascial connections within the equine body including the digestive system and organs, the nervous system and the musculoskeletal systems, understanding this can help us to more effectively rehabilitate the whole horse.
Everything that restricts motion in the jaw, restricts motion in the entire body.
Teeth and stomatognathic system are an integral part of the vestibular proprioceptive balancing mechanism. The nervous system and the righting reflexes are highly dependent on sensory information from dental occlusion.
Think about that and all the implications of correct dental occlusion and the horizon for the state of the nervous system and balance.
If the teeth are not in balance to the individual, the TMJ becomes compromised, and compensations in the body begins. When the horses teeth are not in anatomical correct alignment: nerve impulses and transmission of messages to multiple acupuncture points in the body are restricted. These impulses and messages affect for example organ function, the sensory apparatus and proprioception. Thus, anything that restricts motion in the mouth, restricts motion in the entire body.
For the past years, traditional equine dentistry focused primarily on the theory that eliminating points on molars was necessary to enable a horse to eat better. However, research conducted by Spencer LaFlure, founder of the NBD school, actually found a different approach to be true--that horses need proper inclination on their teeth for correct anterior, posterior and lateral motion of mastication.
Neuromuscular based horse dentistry™, is dedicated to realigning the jaw with ergonomically correct hand-held instruments designed and patented by LaFlure to achieve optimal neuromuscular, proprioceptive and physical function in a horse’s whole body. These precision instruments are more effective for the practitioner and the horse, and also minimize soft tissue damage and discomfort after dentistry. Starting with the incisors, it provides guidance and stability to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), followed by adjustments to the molar table surface to provide anatomically correct inclination. By adjusting the inclination of a horse's dentition, the horse gains a complete and natural movement of its jaw*.
This balances the TMJ and maximizes surface-to-surface contact between teeth, allowing the horse to maintain or regain its full, natural bodily function.
The balance of the jaw impacts the horse, his health and soundness, alignment sees improvement in the horses movement, hoof balance, behavior, metabolism and muscle development.

Combining gentleness, ethical standards, and evidence-based approaches with an intuitive understanding, is at the heart of my work.
Over the course of a life time I have pursued education in different areas of equine well being learning from world renowned methodologies motivated by the desire to help domestic horses heal from unethical practices. While working with horses, mules, donkeys and their people in Italy, Hawaii and Arizona, within training, and then hoof care, I quickly realized that considering the whole horse is crucial no matter if the problem we see is in the hoof, the gut, the mind or in the body. Nothing in the body works alone or can function alone, and a lot of pathology begins in the mouth. I have always been fascinated by the very important role of teeth and the jaw for the horse, a role greater than just eating. As a hoof care provider I was noticing patterns in the horses mind, body and metabolism that had me wondering why despite excellent care some horses never seemed to stay in balance and optimal health, and I wondered where this was stemming from. It was an obvious choice to enroll in Spencer La Flure’s school of Neuromuscular Horse Dentistryhttp://www.neuromuscularhorsedentistry.com
At a current level 4 I have attended and successfully completed four levels at the NBD school.
As an NBD we are trained to work with the horse not ‘on the horse‘. Lots of horses present mouth anxiety from previously having their arcades flattened and smoothed, for this reason maintaining a calm demeanor and communicating with the horse through instrument placement, timing and moving with them is a key part of this work. Horses are very aware of our intentions and allowing them the space to understand and work with us helps build a cooperative experience.
We often work alongside veterinarians, body workers, farriers and other professionals involved in the care of the horse. “A circle of influence“ with like minded professionals working together is a powerful asset for a horse.
When it comes to hoof care I don’t follow one hoof care model. I blend world recognized methods with my own equine-led approach, influenced by the research of Dr. Bowker, for each unique situation, prioritizing comfort and the whole horse.
As a certified Trust Technique Practitioner since 2019 I have also been dedicated to using, and teaching mindfulness practices for nervous system co-regulation, as well as teaching horse owners about ethical practices to enhance their horses emotional and physical well being, herd dynamics, herd integrations, and ethical herd management via principles of equine ethology.
Considering the whole horse including management and environment, by optimizing a holistic approach all around is important to keep happy & healthy horses head to toe.
Learning from rescue horses has been a key component of how I work with all equines. In 2021 with my husband we founded a non-profit and have worked for the rehabilitation and rehoming of equines by providing a “wild horse” environment, and achieving heartwarming results with highly traumatized and neglected animals.
I have since served the south western horses and travel to near by states with Whole Horse Perspectives LLC.
I am also a graduate of Windward Community College- University of Hawaii in Psycho Social Developmental Studies and a former life coach for the state of Hawaii. Certified holistic equine nutritionist with Holistic Animal Studies and continuing my education in holistic nutrition to provide the best guidance and resources to clients, particularly those with endocrine challenged horses.
I live with my husband, our dogs and our herd of horses, mustangs, minis and mules. This herd is my why. They have taught us a lot over the years and continue to teach. Most of them came to us with severe hoof problems, and were challenged in a way or another.
For this reason my great passion became hooves, the connection with teeth, and the intricacies of metabolic disorders, this area is a big part of my life, work.
Currently working on my equine dentistry certification, I am committed to a never ending learning journey. I continue to update my skills by staying current on classes and seminars, so that I can better serve my clients and their horses.
Field work along side teachers, staying up to date with aligned methodologies and scientific research is a priority, as well as learning from every horse I meet and work with.
A big part of this work is also educating clients. I strive to leave every care taker educated, and empowered, and in a listening state with their animal, confident to make sensible decisions now and in the future, that are ethical and feel right to them and the animals in their care. The horse will always be the best judge of our work.
For Horses, Mules, Donkeys, Minis
A whole horse assessment is conducted prior to dental work. Initial evaluation of TMJ movement patterns and natural occlusion, followed by dental adjustments to the incisors and molars using hand floats and speculum. I use mindfulness techniques to keep the horse calm and at ease. The horse is naturally positioned and allowed to put it's head low to the ground during the procedure, enabling the horse to be in whatever position will be most comfortable.
WHE is a thorough evaluation which includes the assessment of hooves, posture, living environment, nutrition, and emotional health identifying and releasing tension through mindful techniques, as well as well as initial evaluation of TMJ movement patterns and natural occlusion, followed by dental adjustments to the incisors and molars. We discuss key components affecting the whole body, and I provide observations and resources on hoof health and balance. Collaborations with your vet, farrier and body worker are welcome. This a great place to start to improve the horses emotional and physical wellbeing, if the horse is experiencing pain, a change in behavior or/and is struggling with unidentified pathology.

After numerous traditional farrier recommendations to euthanize my horse due to the condition of his feet, I knew I needed another option. In 2021 Anna assisted my horse in gaining his comfort and livelihood back through hoof rehabilitation.
Over the course of a year she aided me with the knowledge and tools to improve my horses' nutrition, dental, and emotional health.
Not only was my horse's life saved, but now I have gained confidence that I am providing holistic and intentional care for all of the horses within my care.
Through gentle and holistic equine dentistry practices Anna also corrected the dental health of my mare, Kaya, and drastically improved Kaya’s comfort while not only eating but in all areas of her life. While another mare, Zona, has dental anxiety due to past power tool treatments by equine dentists, Anna was extremely patient and attuned to Zona’s needs when assessing how to move forward with her care.
Anna is committed to continuing to grow her skills to better the lives of the horses and horse caretakers she serves.
I am forever grateful for the work Anna provides and the resource she is.
Anna has been one of the most influential people in the betterment of the lives of our horses and our donkey since she first came to us in 2021. The natural horsemanship we embraced 25-plus years ago cannot hold a candle to the grounded hoof care and Trust Technique she practices. She never hesitates to interface with our vet to gain better knowledge and advice on trims for the advanced arthritic and endocrine disorders in our senior equines, and always makes time to share her observations and expectations on future outcomes. Her sharing of her knowledge concerning the entire health of an equine is always a welcome lesson, from teeth to feeding to learning to trust what our horses and donkey are trying to get across to us with their behavior.
Anna's demeanor is calm in an emotional storm, and she always leaves us with a sense of having learned more in the care of our animals, from toes to head. Most importantly, the love she derives from her work with equines, and the pride, joy and excitement she exhibits with a successful outcome for the animal is a testament to her ability as a whole horse practitioner.
I had a wonderful experience with Anna from the Center for Neuromuscular Based Horse Dentistry. After many years of providing traditional dentistry for my horses, I have become increasingly more aware of the risks associated with power tools, as well as the impact of overfloating and “one size fits all” floats. I set out to find a different kind of practitioner, and I could not be happier with the results. My horse Dolly had better canter transitions than ever, which has been a big sticking point with her for a long time.
My horses were active participants in the experience while in a relaxed, natural stance. This allowed us to see the horse’s feedback and the results of her work in motion. Their heads were not hung up high, the speculum was never left open for long, and we had the opportunity to truly see and feel the differences between her work and the kind of equine dentistry I had been exposed to in the past.
Thank you, Anna, for a fantastic experience!
The way Anna worked with my horses was impressive. I was certain that neither would let her look into their mouths with the speculum as they both have some degree of mouth anxiety. Anna was calm and methodical as she went through the motions so that they could understand what she was doing. Before we knew it they were calm, aware, and actively cooperating.
Anna explained in detail about connections within the body, restrictions, how to see them in their heads and body, and the neurological effect of restoring inclination. I also got to feel their mout before and after which was a great experience.
After we reviewed their feeding regime, and looked at their hooves which I trim myself, and Anna gave me some great advice on how to improve the quality of my trims and shared online resources. My horses, had a beautiful experience on top of being treated correctly. In the days after I saw my horses chewing better and no longer lifting their heads from their buckets dropping feed, and standing in a calm and comfortable manner.
Anna was just so kind and knowledgeable and I felt actively involved the whole time which is incredibly valuable to me as their care taker.
Highly Reccomend!
Anna has been an incredible teacher to our family since 2022. As someone who never grew up with horses I can say she has been incredibly kind and patient, helping our family learn what our horses need. She has helped our family when our mini had double pneumonia up to recent when he was diagnosed with Cushings and Laminitis. She has worked along side our Vet, whom she has been so encouraging of. We could not help our herd without her.
I cannot recommend her enough.
Anna has helped us with our horses in so many ways. She has gone above and beyond. Once we wanted to help a horse in need as the owner was struggling to provide adequate care. I sent Anna a photo of the horses' feet, and she promptly arrived to assist. Anna trimmed that horse's hooves in order that it could walk.
Its feet had probably been untouched for over a year. Not only does Anna trim our horses' hooves, and she does an amazing job, but she shares her vast knowledge on every aspect of horsekeeping. She never gives us unsolicited advice. Instead, she gives gentle suggestions to help us elevate the level of care for our horses. Anna is not motivated by ego, but by a sincere desire to promote the healthy well-being of horses. It is an honor to know Anna.
Anna worked with my horses and their individual comfort levels to achieve a cooperative dental experience. Two out of three horses did not even need me to dorm gel to collaborate with Anna on their dentals. As Anna evaluated their teeth each horse seemed to acknowledge and lean into each problem spot. It was really amazing to see each horse signal with their body language she had located a problem, lean in or pause for her to address the issue, then experience relief and comfort immediately. All three horses have been so calm and comfortable since their dental. One horse in particular has had enlarged temporalis muscles since the day he joined our herd. Not only have the muscles reduced in size but they are much softer and more supple. Previous traditional dentals with power floats didn't seem to provide him any comfort. He's finally finding the relief and relaxation he desperately needed.
I can't say enough about how caring, knowledgeable and empathetic Anna has been towards our mares, and the proof is evident in how happy and healthy they are after every visit from her.
Our draft cross mare was having a lot of problems with her hooves including a bad abscess and pain walking .. One overzealous vet even callously recommended the worst solution which i won't give credence to here .. and after working with another farrier for many years he referred Anna and we became one of her regular clients. The results were immediately positive and anyone who knows horses can see their responses to being handled well and knowledgeably cared for .. these horses properly barefoot transitioned and loving it.
They have never been happier or healthier and anticipate being treated monthly to her exceptional care and attention. Us and our critters are extremely grateful.
Anna's help and guidance with the Trust Technique and beyond forever changed my relationship and path with my horse Lokahi (and, subsequently, with other animals and even people in my life).
What might have looked like an impressive show of horsemanship to some (with our liberty work and other common "natural horsemanship" moves) actually masked a struggling and suffering relationship--think biting and rearing, tears of defeat, fear for my safety and a lot more ugliness behind the scenes.
With Anna's guidance in 2019 I was able to reach a whole new plane of existence with my horse that I honestly didn't think I'd ever get to experience with him.
I will always remember Anna's kind patience as I hit my own personal snags along the journey of helping my horse. It was such a vulnerable time for me and through it all she held a non-judgemental space of support for me, just as I learned to do for my horses.
I'm forever grateful for Anna's teachings. They truly changed my life and my relationships with others.
I absolutely love Anna! She has been so essential in the hoof recovery of my horse, Prince since 2022. Anna has the knowledge and patience necessary to give my horse, mustang, and donkeys the best care. She never traumatized them with twitches, ropes, or any other inhumane practice that other professionals often use. And she is also our trusted dentist!
The animals love and trust her. Thank you Anna!
Our boys are doing really well after their dentals! Mika has filled out and the most amazing thing is that he has stopped coughing! He used to cough all the time, especially with short cut hay. Oh, and he is shiny even with his winter coat! Ray is so mellow, and his crest is normal looking now, no IR bulge there. Also, his sheath is more normal looking too. Good changes with him too. I want to thank you for educating me on what to look for in horses that have had their teeth power floated. Thank you so much for taking care of our horses, we really appreciate you.
